What is Lima?

Image
Lima is the capital city of Peru and is one of the largest cities in South America. Did you know that Peru is four times bigger than Great Britain but only has half the population. Lima is located on a desert coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean and is one of the driest capitals in the world.  Using these photos of Lima, the children had to group them using only the photos. Once they had placed them into groups they were asked to put them into groups of urban and rural. Then, the watched a short clip on Lima and how the people in the rural areas do not have access to enough water to live so they catch the fog using nets to help replenish their water supply.

Computing - Lesson 3: Navigation and External Links

Image
This week in Year 6 we have been learning how to add external links to our sites, thinking carefully about the appropriateness of what we add and how reliable the information or site is. We also spoke about easy navigation and the importance of navigation paths or breadcrumb trails to help our users.

What is the physical geography of South America?

Image
Using their knowledge of the Equator, Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle, the children identified the different biomes and physical geography found in South America.  There Amazon Rainforest which is the largest tropical rainforest in the world is located in many of the countries but mostly Brazil. Here the Amazon river runs mostly through the rainforest and is approximately 4000 miles long. The Atacama Desert is found on the western side alongside the mountain range: The Andes.  With support from their atlases, teaching and biome learning mats the children identified the different biomes. After this, they were given pictures of different biomes and they described where these could be found.

PE - gymnastics

This week the children have been working really hard at their balance in gymnastics. They were able to self assess their own ability and then make the activities harder or easier. The balancing was made harder by holding bean bags, walking backwards or even holding an egg and spoon.  Another activity the children, was climbing over the monkey bars, which some of the children really had to work up the courage to do.  Well done to all of the Year 6 pupils who showed at all times they were: Ready, Respectful and most of all Safe in their lessons this week.

Computing - Lesson 2: Copyright

Image
Today in Year 6 we discussed what is meant by Copyright and Fair Use, and how these would apply to us when building our websites. We found out how to find non-copyrighted images to use in our sites, as well as the importance of crediting work. Finally we continued our sites, adding images to new pages from a copyright free library.

French: Monter un Cafe

Image
Year 6 started their new topic all about setting up a cafe. They started by looking at a French cafe menu, and writing down any words they knew. They then wrote down unknown words and spent some time using e French/ English dictionary to write down the meanings.  This last week they labelled some food vocabulary and practised the past tense, by telling choosing an item from the menu and telling their partner what they had eaten and drunk.

What makes up South America?

Image
During this week’s lessons, the children used the contents page to find South America and then they recapped using locational language where South America is located in relation to The United Kingdom. From here, they discussed the different sovereign states found in South America and the 2 non-sovereign states which are owned by The United Kingdom and France. The children also identified that there are two countries with 2 capital cities: one for administrative duties and one as the capital city.  The children were then introduced to new vocabulary:isthmus. This is a  narrow strip of land with sea on either side, forming a link between two larger areas of land. As a class we looked four different versions including one from New Zealand as one of the children was born there and the one found between North and South America. Finally, they watched a video about the Panama Canal and its effect on shipping when there is a blockage.

French:to describe the journey of the Congo river

Image
Year 6, revised the past tense of weather phrases, which were used in paragraphs describing the different phases of the journey of the Congo river during different months. The children worked in groups to match images with the paragraphs and then placed them in chronological order, they then completed a matching activity independently. in paragraphs describing the different phases of the journey of the Congo river during different months.
