What makes up South America?
During this week’s lessons, the children used the contents page to find South America and then they recapped using locational language where South America is located in relation to The United Kingdom. From here, they discussed the different sovereign states found in South America and the 2 non-sovereign states which are owned by The United Kingdom and France. The children also identified that there are two countries with 2 capital cities: one for administrative duties and one as the capital city.
The children were then introduced to new vocabulary:isthmus. This is a narrow strip of land with sea on either side, forming a link between two larger areas of land. As a class we looked four different versions including one from New Zealand as one of the children was born there and the one found between North and South America. Finally, they watched a video about the Panama Canal and its effect on shipping when there is a blockage.
