RE Festival- Lailat-Ul-Bara'ah

Today we looked at the Muslim festival of Lailat-Ul-Bara'ah. This February festival is known as the night of forgiveness as it is thought to be the one night of the year Allah comes closer to earth to judge his people for the year ahead. Many Muslims will seek forgiveness for any sins they may have and will often spend the night is often spent in prayer, asking for forgiveness and Allah's guidance.  We thought about times in our own life where we may have made a mistake or done something that we regret and then we considered how we could make amends for this. Our activity involved making a paper origami dove- a dove is considered to be a sign of peace and forgiveness in many different religions.

During their lesson this week, the children used their compass directions and locational language as well as their knowledge of the land to help them explain which way they would travel to different locations.  Using an atlas to support their decisions they located: Peru, Montevideo, Lake Titicaca, Stanley and Manaus.  They then watched a clip about how the Uros people live on Totora reeds and their lifestyle.  Using Venn  diagrams they collated the similarities and differences between how the Uros people and how we live.  The children then looked at different artefacts, photos and clothing from Peru. They loved it.
