What is an Earthquake?

This week the children began playing a game of ‘Where in the World’, then they recapped different countries found in different climate zones from last lesson.

Moving on, the children were excited to begin learning about earthquakes as they recapped their knowledge from year 3:  different layers of the Earth and the three types of tectonic plates. After watching a clip which explained the features of the layers the children completed their first activity. Then, they watched a clip of an earthquake in Turkey (2023). Using this stimulus they looked at what they could, hear and see. This prompted many questions about how earthquakes are measured and if we have had an earthquake in  Britain. Together they looked at the Richter Scale and the effects at each level as well as identifying the focus, epicentre and seismic waves.

Some amazing questions today, well done year 6.
